Scooping the Poop for Prizes

Scooping the Poop for Prizes

For the last 10 yrs I’ve worked with friend and Hill dog owner Diane Davison on that quirky ritual of spring, April Stool’s Day.   ASD was her response, 17 yrs ago, to sidewalk poop, a holler out to the community to come out as a group and clean up the neighborhood including the grassy area of the Eastern Prom and East End Beach.  Diane is a unique combination of citizen activist, animal lover, gardener and massage therapist.  Oh and martini drinker.  I like that last part b/c it means we can work on ASD over a martini, and I like the contrast of a cold martini with the messy subject of picking up poop in mud season.  Fetch has been involved every year since we opened, which, not coincidentally, was on April Stool’s Day in 2000.  Some years have been a big production, and others have been quick and all ‘business’.  (I’d like to point out for a moment that I am not a user of  bad pet puns.  It doesn’t even tempt me.  I think the word ‘business’ is kind of fresh and underused.)  This year we’re keeping it simple, but we’re also looking to spread the event into other dog areas in the Portland area.  We’re really excited to work with SoPoD0g in South Portland.  We’re hoping that Downeast Dog News will cover the event and help us get the word out.  Any local dog owners or dog groups are welcome to get involved.  More info coming in future posts.  You can see a few other pix of the 2001 ASD, which was our biggest and baddest effort, on our photogallery.  Just click the link on the right side of the page.
